Getting on track
Some security guard services companies discover that their existing in-house training programmes cover the majority of national qualifications training. In these cases, employees simply need to be assessed as competent for their skills to be recognised and a national qualification awarded.
National Certificate in Security (Level 2)
This programme covers a range of knowledge and skills common to security, these include:
- the security industry and professional standards expected of the industry and those who work in it;
- the law as it applies to the industry;
- health and safety requirements, and personal risk management;
- dealing with emergencies as security personnel and be able to apply first aid skills;
- conflict management and be able to apply communication skills and knowledge of distance, space and positioning to manage conflict;
- operational requirements, including control of entry and exit to premises, and observation and threat identification; and
- communication skills.
There is also a small elective section that allows people to choose specified standards relevant to their role.
To be able to gain the level 3 or 4 qualifications trainees will need to gain this qualification.
National Certificate in Security (Level 3 or 4)
Covering a broad range of skills and knowledge common to all security officers as well as specific skills (strands) to match the particular type of service in which they are working in.
To achieve the qualification, a trainee must complete one (or more) of these strands.
- Event security covering participation in team activities, access control, risk management, plus health and safety.
- Retail security is aimed at retail outlet security officers, this includes work on minimising retail theft and fraud, managing access and protecting stock and cash.
- Site security – covers maintaining security and safety by controlling access of people, vehicles, materials and substances, and by patrolling to detect abnormal safety or security event.
- Court security is aimed at court security officers and focuses on person and property searches, health and safety and operation of court security systems and equipment.
- Mobile patrol - covers how to provide security for a range of separate sites and locations on scheduled visits, as well as responding to alarm activations or other warnings.
- Secure transport - covers how to transport cash and other high value objects in special purpose vehicles.
- Noise control – covers conduct of noise control operations, risk management, safe and secure vehicle operation, preparation and processing of reports and records.
- Community security - trainees will gain knowledge in providing security services to designated communities, in close cooperation with other agencies.
National Certificate in Security (Level 4) with strand in Team Leader
The next step on the learning pathway for security staff the level 4 programme covers problem solving, implementing a health and safety plan; and security specific skills of investigation, evidence preservation, and identifying and minimising risk.
Recommended prerequisite for entry:
The National Certificate in Security (Level 3 or 4) – those who have these qualifications will have gained 29 credits towards completion of the team leader qualification.
